The Grotte del Passetto are a remarkable ensemble of over 400–500 man‑made sea caves carved into Ancona’s high limestone cliffs between the mid‑19th century and the 1960s. Originally built by local fishermen as protected boat shelters, many caves today feature vibrant doors, makeshift docks, and even small terraces—some maintained by families or used for fishing and sunbathing. Nestled just beneath the scenic cliffs of the Passetto district, they remain an iconic symbol of Ancona’s enduring relationship with the sea.
